We chose this extract from the film Quelques minutes après minuit because it’s a film that was close to all our hearts.

Connor’s encounter with the monster

We decided to use this passage because Juan Antonio Bayona’s direction was interesting on several levels. There’s a certain tension that builds up in this passage, as it’s Connor’s first encounter with the monster.

The film tackles a number of interesting themes, including childhood, grief and the passage to adulthood. We also chose this extract because it is interesting from the point of view of the set (generous with props and large set pieces), the image (movement, machinery, restitching, lighting) and also the post-production (Vfx, colour grading).

This extract from the film gave a good idea of the complexities of shooting with a larger crew, while addressing the specific points of each job.
