“How does Chinese cinema treat the traditional arts that have nurtured China’s long civilisation? How do the various genres of Chinese cinema showcase these arts of Far Eastern high culture? This will be the theme of our annual festival on the occasion of its tenth anniversary.
The festival will kick off with two screenings devoted to opera at the Cinématographe on Friday 23 March. Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March will be devoted entirely to the martial arts: Hou Hsiao-hsien’s ‘Assassin’, followed by King Hu’s classic ‘Touch of Zen’ and the more recent ‘The Master’.
The festival will be punctuated by a series of lectures, as well as an exhibition by the painter and calligrapher Ye Xin at the Véronèse gallery in Nantes. And on Monday 26 March, researcher Marie Laureillard will be giving a talk on the comic strip tradition in China at the Médiathèque Jacques-Demy. You can find the full festival programme on their website.
