Blood and burn
A gothic trailer with futuristic overtones
CinéCréatis Montpellier students unveil Blood and Burn, a 1.5-minute trailer that lays the foundations for a dark, hybrid and spectacular universe, somewhere between gothic mythology and futuristic science fiction. Conceived as a showcase for a feature film in the making, the project explores both the construction of a character and the affirmation of a strong visual identity.

Trailer pitch
Dawn is approaching, but the darkness is stalking him. Through desolate lands and a cursed castle, Draxx, a vampire with a mechanical arm, embarks on a quest for vengeance: to awaken Dracula…
at the risk of plunging the world into chaos and bloodshed.
An anti-hero shaped by revenge
At the centre of the story is Draxx, a mutilated vampire with a mechanical arm, a figure haunted by ancient pain. The trailer is built around three successive emotional states – determination, confusion and then hatred – which structure the dramatic progression.
Her objective is clear: to awaken Dracula, even if it means triggering an irreversible cataclysm. But behind the warlike stance lies a more intimate tragedy. Draxx advances like a wounded beast, crushed by oversized sets that reflect his inner conflict.
Aesthetics inspired by Expressionism
The artistic direction claims a strong influence from German Expressionism, notably through the scale of the sets and the use of chiaroscuro. The omnipresent moon becomes a veritable visual character: immense, broken, almost menacing, it guides Draxx along his destructive path.
The film is dominated by cold tones (deep blues, lunar whites, touches of red) before switching to a fiery orange heat in the final sequence on the dock. This colour change accompanies the character’s emotional explosion.
The space is never neutral: the hall of the castle, frozen in the traces of ancient carnage, acts as a mirror of Draxx’s inner chaos. Each set represents a stage in his downfall.
A rhythm in five movements
The montage of the trailer follows a precise construction:
- A slow, contemplative opening to set the mood.
- A dynamic break marked by Draxx’s departure on his motorbike.
- A more oppressive phase inside the castle.
- A nervous build-up to the discovery of the black egg.
- A final climax marked by the body blowing and the visual conflagration.
This rhythmic progression aims to maintain a balance between mystery and understanding of what’s at stake, while building tension right up to the final crack.
Immersive, organic sound work
Sound design plays a central role. Intradiegetic noises (metal, breath, wind, creaking) become musical elements in their own right. Draxx’s deep, gravelly voice-over conveys contained anger, fuelled by deep distress.
The sonic energy is inspired by raw, visceral worlds, seeking to convey the emotional brutality of the character without ever losing its tragic dimension.
A hybrid production: real and virtual
To bring its monumental sets to life, Blood and Burn uses Unreal Engine, a tool that has become essential for creating photorealistic digital environments. This choice enabled the team to combine real shots on green screen with complex virtual worlds.
The use of real-time rendering means that VFX shots can be previewed as soon as they are shot, optimising the artistic and technical coherence of the project.
An ambitious showcase
More than just an exercise in style, Blood and Burn asserts a desire to offer a coherent, intense and visually assertive cinematic universe. Through this trailer, the team is laying the foundations for a much wider story, in which one vampire’s personal vengeance could well precipitate the collapse of an entire world.
Film made during the third year of study at Cinécréatis.
