Film pitch

In the remote countryside, a father and daughter take in a wounded German soldier who has deserted the front. Between mistrust, compassion and fear of the enemy, the manor house becomes a silent trap. In this stifling in camera setting, a single choice is enough to turn their destinies upside down…

When war comes knocking at the door

Set far from the front line of the First World War, the film plunges us into a rural hideaway where the war, though physically absent, permeates every gesture and every glance. The meeting between Léonard, Yvette and the German deserter becomes the starting point for a moral tragedy in which human beings come face to face with fear, duty and survival.

The synopsis thus reflects a clear desire to tell the story of the war not through the spectacular, but through its intimate repercussions, as reflected in the various artistic and technical statements of intent.

Heroes who can't go backwards or forwards

Léonard and Yvette embody two opposing responses to the war. He, a ruined former bourgeois, is shaped by the fear of losing what he has left: his daughter. She, on the other hand, is guided by an instinctive empathy that transcends borders and uniforms. The German deserter, wounded and silent, becomes a mirror of their own moral dilemmas: should they protect their own or save a man?

The isolated manor house acts as a psychological prison. Far from the front, but surrounded by war, the characters are forced to make irreversible choices. The arrival of the high-ranking German officer upsets this fragile balance: the external threat penetrates the intimate space, transforming the house into a moral battlefield.

Light, colour and sound

Light plays a central role in the drama. The orange-red hues at the end of the day herald the violence to come, while the total eclipse becomes a visual symbol of the disappearance of moral reference points. Time seems to stand still, reinforcing the idea of a world where values are eroded in favour of survival, as the lighting and staging intentions underline.

The sound work accentuates the tension: heavy silences, the distant sounds of boots or guns, the panting of the characters. The final shot, fired in an almost sacred silence, acts as a brutal rupture, marking the irreversibility of the choices made.

To protect is to condemn

With a simple look of denunciation, Léonard thinks he is protecting his daughter, but sends the house into chaos. This tiny, almost invisible gesture becomes the most weighty act in the story. It illustrates how war pushes ordinary people towards decisions that overwhelm and destroy them.

The deserter’s final dilemma, whether to flee or save Yvette, seals the film’s purpose. By choosing to flee, he unwillingly reproduces the logic of war: every man for himself. The last image of the film offers a brutal ending: Léonard lying dead, Yvette taken away by force. No comfort, no moral victory. The film is a reminder that, in this ravaged world, there are only the defeated.

The film stands out as a profoundly human work, in which every technical and artistic detail of the mise en scène serves a clear purpose: war destroys people’s consciences more than it does their bodies.
