SYNOPSIS

The Dossier pro, produced in the third year, is a free film project that gives students the opportunity to express their creativity to the full. In the space of 2.5 days of filming, they create original works that demonstrate their maturity and the skills they have developed over the course of their training.

Synopsis

The last lighthouse keeper in France, Serge is looking back at his old job. He will be returning to the place where he worked for many years, the Grand Phare, and this reunion will make him think about his past.
Serge worked in this profession for many years before being forced to stop because of automation, a change he sees as a long journey with an unexpected end. He shares his memories, anecdotes and feelings about the gradual disappearance of this legendary profession. This job, which required braving solitude and the elements to help boats, is now a thing of the past.

The lighthouse appears to be frozen in time, a structure that stands still despite the years. Yet Serge continues to evolve. Throughout the documentary, he takes us back to his beginnings, his key experiences and his thoughts on this transition. The second part deconstructs the myth of the lighthouse keeper by focusing on modernisation and the impact of technological change.

We follow Serge as he makes the transition to a new life. Now a deputy mayor, he continues to be involved in preserving our maritime heritage. His relationship with the lighthouse has never really ended. Through his interactions and commitments, we’ll see how he was able to bounce back and rebuild his life.

Choice of subject explained by students

In making this documentary, we wanted to immerse ourselves in a unique environment. Our attraction for an aquatic environment and our desire to explore an atypical profession led us to lighthouse keeping.

Serge, our protagonist, discovered this profession as a child, having lived in a lighthouse keeper’s house between 1956 and 1960. Later, he naturally turned to this career, passing a competitive examination to become a full-time lighthouse keeper. He adapted to the solitude inherent in the job, a situation in which he even found a certain fulfilment. However, with the automation of lighthouses, he had to close several facilities, marking the end of an era.

The aim of the documentary is to explore the disappearance of certain professions in the face of technological advances, a phenomenon that affects many sectors today.
