Research & Creation: a two-stage project

From reality to fiction: a two-stage project

Second-year students at Cinécréatis are carrying out a project entitled “Research and Creation”, the main aim of which is to produce a short film.

The project has two complementary stages: firstly, the students select a theme and propose a documentary treatment of it. In the second stage, they have to use the same theme to produce a fictional version, giving rise to a short narrative film.

Working as a team, the students have five days to shoot, edit and present their project to a jury. This time constraint allows them to develop their organisational skills, creativity and ability to work effectively together.

The synopses below represent just a sample of the projects we have completed.

  • Fairy Plum Dreamer : During a simple walk, Olivia is reminded of her youth spent in the demanding world of ballet. Faced with the place where it all began, and watching young dancers rehearse, she finds herself confronted with her joys, her wounds and her forgotten dreams. As she moves back and forth between now and then, she embarks on an inner journey where nostalgia meets lucidity, slowly coming to terms with who she was.
  • Cathartic: Through an interview with Russian filmmaker Marusya Syroechkovskaya, this documentary explores how the creation of “How to Save a Dead Friend” enabled her to transform her traumas into a liberating artistic gesture. Using her voice, archive footage and locations evocative of her past, the film reveals the cathartic role of film and music in her journey.
  • Drag Queen: This documentary explores drag as a liberating art form, giving a voice to two Drag Queens to understand what this practice brings beyond the everyday. Through chapters mixing archive footage and reflections on the stage, the body and identity, it celebrates drag with optimism and hope.
  • That’s the way it is: Through military archives and intimate testimonies, this documentary explores the invisible scars left by war. Following Tony’s story and Angélique’s view of psychological trauma, the film reveals the silence of soldiers and questions the still inadequate support systems, offering a sensitive journey to theheart oftraumatic memory.
