Vision engineer

l’ingénieur de la vision

The vision engineer is the technician responsible for image quality.

Created in the digital age, this is first and foremost a technical profession, requiring in-depth knowledge of digital equipment and new technologies. Here’s a closer look.

Vision engineer: role and mission

On an audiovisual production, the rendering of the image is the business of a large number of professionals. One of them is the vision engineer! Working with the director of photography, he or she will adjust the digital equipment according to the parameters defined by the latter, and ensure the quality of the images captured. To do this, he keeps an eye on each camera, and makes sure that the contrasts and colours match from one camera to another, so that there are no differences in rendering. He also manages the calibration of the video return monitor.

His technical and visual expertise enables him to advise the director of photography as best he can on his choices, and to suggest settings that are as close as possible to his guidelines. During the shoot, they check the images captured and report any problems that need to be resolved (blur, poor framing, reflections, etc.) to the camera crews. They are also responsible for managing and backing up the data, which they pass on to the post-production teams, ensuring its quality.

How do I become a vision engineer?

To work as a vision engineer, it is common to opt for training in the audiovisual sector, which gives you all the background you need for a complete understanding of the film industry.

Qualities and skills

This professional is also able to demonstrate great rigour in his work: he masters the various computer systems and knows how to optimise the workflow, with a view to facilitating the storage of data and its transmission to the post-production teams.
