On 11 April 2026, the city of Montpellier shone to the rhythm of audiovisual creation at the Cinécréatis event. Running from 10am to 5pm, this exceptional day was free and open to all, giving a wide audience the chance to discover the behind-the-scenes world of cinema through a hands-on, interactive experience.
From the very first hours, curious people, enthusiasts and future professionals came together to explore the many facets of film-making. The aim was clear: to make the often little-known jobs behind the camera accessible to as many people as possible. From the initial idea to the final image, participants were able to learn about the different stages of audiovisual creation.
At the heart of the day’s events were a number of practical workshops that provided real-life experience. The green screen overlay workshop in particular attracted a great deal of interest. Participants were able to understand how this emblematic technique can be used to integrate a character into fictional settings, opening the door to infinite visual universes. A few metres away, the lighting workshop offered an equally fascinating experience: transforming the same scene into a day or night atmosphere simply by playing with the spotlights, with immediate feedback on the monitor.
Technological innovation was also in the spotlight with the Motion Capture workshop. This technique, now an essential part of the film and video game industry, enabled visitors to discover how human movements are captured and then reproduced on digital characters. It was an immersive experience that left a lasting impression.
The dubbing workshop gave participants the chance to lend their voice to a character. It was a unique opportunity to understand the subtleties of this profession and the adjustments needed to synchronise voice and image. On a different note, discovering how to train dogs for the cinema was an opportunity to look at an aspect of filming that is often invisible: working with animals on screen, and the demands and professionalism involved.
The set design area also attracted attention, with a workshop devoted to the development of a set for the film Ti’prince. Visitors were able to observe the various stages involved in designing and adapting a scenic space. At the same time, a mashup workshop led by a speaker from Cinemed offered an original creative approach: composing a new work from existing images, illustrating the richness of montage and visual storytelling.
One of the highlights of the day was a talk by Valérian Cadici at 2.30pm. A well-known director, author and screenwriter, he is best known for his short film L’Odeur de la lavande (2025). During his talk, he shared his career path, his inspirations and his advice, providing a valuable and inspiring testimonial for the participants.
Throughout the day, visitors were also treated to screenings of student films made by Cinécréatis students. These films highlighted the creativity and emerging talent of the new generation. At the same time, a photo stand, manned by the students, offered visitors the chance to take home a personalised souvenir of the event.
In addition to its activities, Cinécréatis Montpellier was able to create a genuine space for exchange and sharing. The passionate and accessible speakers took the time to share their experience and answer the many questions from the audience.
In this way, the day fulfilled its mission of democratising access to the film industry and encouraging vocations. With its immersive and educational approach, the event confirmed the public’s growing interest in what goes on behind the scenes of audiovisual creation, while at the same time showcasing the talents and skills that are shaping the cinema of today and tomorrow.
