Freshly graduated! Pablo Trotouin, director

Graduating in 2021, Pablo now works for an advertising agency, as well as making music videos!

You graduated last year! Can you tell us which subject you chose and why?

During my studies in Lyon, I didn’t know what I wanted to do specifically. In the second year, we were asked to choose a major. What appealed to me at the time was being on the set, as close as possible to the artistic process. So I chose the ‘Image’ major.

What job do you do today, in which company, and what are your responsibilities?

After Cinécréatis, I went up to Paris where I did a 4-month work placement with the Al Dente agency, working as an editor in luxury advertising and assisting an art director with future campaigns. This enabled me to develop new skills in post-production and art direction.
I then went on to do another work placement with the production company Storm Prod as a production assistant. So I had the opportunity to work in all kinds of sectors, which gave me the idea of embarking on a new project.

In January, I decided to set up my own business in order to tackle different projects and really get into making music videos and advertising.
This enabled me to meet and work with several production companies. The aim was to expand my network by working on editing, framing, production assistants and electricians. I took on a bit of everything that came my way.

The people I worked with described me as a ‘multi-tasker’, particularly for the work I did in editing, framing and production.

Today, I’m lucky enough to have joined the Team Whaaat agency, with whom I’ve been producing adverts for a few months now.

At the same time, I’m making music videos with my old classmates, because we want to make our mark in the music video industry.

Which project has particularly impressed you?

The project that made the biggest impression on me this year was the first video clip I made in Paris for the artist Lean Chihiro. I was lucky enough to work on her next track when I’d just arrived in Paris from school. We didn’t have much of a budget and not a lot of technical resources. We had to find solutions in a short space of time given the ambitions we had. It was at that point that we started working together with some close friends from the class, and we did this project from A to Z with a lot of creative freedom – those are some great memories! (The result is pretty amazing with the resources we had, ahah!)
Thanks to this clip, I’ve been able to work for new artists and make increasingly ‘ambitious’ clips.

Did your first steps in the professional world correspond to your expectations?

To be honest, I wanted to get into the music video industry first and not advertising, which didn’t appeal to me that much at first.
With hindsight, I think I was lucky to have had the opportunity to work in and observe all sectors of the audiovisual industry. It’s not easy to find a job straight from school. As far as I’m concerned, it made me realise that directing is the field I want to work in.

If you had to sum up what you remember from your 3 years at CinéCréatis and what you find most useful today :

First and foremost, the friends and acquaintances I’ve made! It’s also what helps me the most today, because it’s my first network. When I arrived in Paris, I didn’t know many people and it’s true that to create projects and show what we can do, it was important for me that we all support each other.
It was my first ‘cover’, which gave me credibility in the professional world and enabled me to seize opportunities when I arrived in Paris.

A few words for current and future CinéCréatis students?

I didn’t realise it at the start, but as I work on a rap label while I’m studying and am involved in several video associations, I think it’s essential for every student to create, practise and produce in their free time. It’s really given me the taste and satisfaction of putting into practice what we’ve been taught in class.
As I also said, the end-of-studies professional project is a team project, but it’s first and foremost a personal one! It’s an important first step, because you’re selling a project that looks like you and is unique to you.
