Lavomatik: A mini-series looking at the human side of everyday life

A hidden world where identities are revealed

The story features three characters with deliberately contrasting profiles:

  • a reserved hunter
  • a young girl who is discreet but sharp,
  • and a pro-vegan woman who is as loud as she is incoherent.

Their interaction, superficial at first, gradually evolves into a form of mutual unmasking. Postures fall, contradictions emerge, and each reveals, in spite of himself, a truth that is more intimate than what he was pretending.

A fourth character, a silent observer at the back of the room, acts as a witness, an alter-ego of both the author and the audience.

Between comedy and introspection

Lavomatik mixes humour with a look at society. The series points out the inconsistencies of its characters without ridiculing them. On the contrary, it chooses to treat them with kindness, reminding us that stated convictions do not always tell the truth about people.

Beneath its air of light comedy, the project actually tackles fundamental themes:

  • social double-dealing
  • the pressure of appearances,
  • the chance encounter that triggers transformation.

A minimalist but ambitious production

Directed and written by Mona Hay, the series is based on a pared-down production style, designed to leave plenty of room for dialogue and silence. The technical work, carried out by a complete student team (image, sound, lighting, sets, machinery, production), stands out for its professional approach:

  • Sober and static cutting, favouring restraint and observation.
  • Narrative sound work, where each character is introduced by an acoustic signature.
  • Costumes and accessories with a strong symbolic dimension, playing on the visual codes of the identities represented.
  • Daring technical initiatives, such as a tracking shot inside a washing machine using a custom-made device.

A generational look at relationships

As well as being a stylistic exercise, Lavomatik is a sincere reflection on the way in which the younger generations perceive human relationships: lucid, critical, but deeply attached to the notion of encounters.

For if a launderette is used to wash clothes, this series seems to ask a question in the background: what if certain places also allowed us to wash ourselves of our characters?
