Oppenheimer way: A flagship project in the second year at Cinécréatis

As part of the Cinécréatis curriculum, the “À la manière de…” project is a fundamental exercise for second-year students. It involves recreating a scene from an existing film as faithfully as possible, drawing on all the technical and artistic skills acquired during the course. Far from being a simple imitation, this exercise requires an in-depth understanding of directing, lighting, acting and the technical constraints of professional cinema.

Recreating tension: a key Oppenheimer scene

For this project, the students chose to reproduce a scene from Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer. The extract selected takes place shortly before the Trinity test in 1945, the historic moment corresponding to the first nuclear explosion. The scene features a dialogue between J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves in a bunker, as they discuss a terrifying hypothesis: the possibility that the explosion could trigger a chain reaction capable of destroying the Earth’s atmosphere. This discussion, both scientific and moral, embodies all the dramatic tension of the film, between fascination for progress and fear of its consequences.

This scene was chosen for its emotional and narrative richness. It contrasts two points of view: that of a scientist aware of the implications of his discovery, and that of a soldier faced with immediate responsibility. This confrontation relies less on action than on the inner tension of the characters, which makes it a particularly interesting challenge for the students, especially in terms of directing the actors and managing the pace.

The choice of staging and technical resources

In terms of direction, the aim was to convey the film’s uniqueness. The director therefore chose to work from the original version without showing it to the actors, in order to encourage personal interpretation. The work focused on the flow of the dialogue, the gravity of the voices and the understanding of the historical issues, enabling the actors to make the characters their own while respecting their depth.

The technical resources employed reflect a commitment to meticulous reproduction. In terms of images, the team opted for a Sony FX9 camera, with a Full Frame sensor that approximates the IMAX rendering used in the original film. The choice of focal lengths and camera movements was carefully considered to recreate the intimacy and tension of the scene. Light dollies and subtle movements accompany the actors, enhancing immersion without drawing attention to the technique.

Lighting is also an important issue in this project. The main aim was to recreate the dark, contrasting atmosphere of the original scene, working in particular on strong shadow effects and a coherent visual atmosphere. Particular attention was paid to external effects, such as the rain visible through the bunker door, which helped to reinforce the dramatic tension.

The set, recreated entirely in the studio, is based on a precise analysis of the film in order to faithfully reproduce the bunker environment. The students designed a believable, immersive space, incorporating furniture and accessories that were consistent with the period, while ensuring harmony with the image and lighting.

Finally, sound plays a key role in the ambience of the stage. The soundscape, inspired by a storm, accompanies the emotions of the characters and reinforces the tension of the dialogue. The work on voices, music and silences supports the drama without overloading the stage.

In this way, the “À la manière de…” project perfectly illustrates the complexity of a film shoot. By recreating an emblematic scene fromOppenheimer, the Cinécréatis students demonstrate their ability to analyse a work of art, to understand what is at stake and to mobilise precise technical resources to recreate its full power.
