A powder keg: when a single cigarette butt sparks a media storm

*Le Feu aux poudres*: when a single cigarette butt sparks a media storm

How can a seemingly trivial act become a national issue? This is the question at the heart of Le Feu aux poudres, a graduation short film conceived and directed by students at Cinécréatis. Through a social satire blending absurd comedy and black humour, the film tackles deeply contemporary issues: disinformation, media hysteria and the prejudices that shape how we view others.

The story follows Youssef, a student from Nantes whose day is turned upside down by what is, in fact, a trivial act. By picking up a still-hot cigarette butt to throw it into an already full bin, he simply believes he is acting as a responsible citizen. Moments later, the bin bursts into flames. A video of the scene goes viral on social media and, very quickly, interpretations take the place of the facts. Within hours, Youssef unwittingly becomes the centre of a national controversy. Influencers, news channels, television debates and internet users turn this minor incident into alleged proof of a malicious act. Soon, the young man is branded a public threat.

A critical look at our relationship with information

Through this film, directors Evaëlle Noury-Gomis and Eluan Lejehan seek to examine our ability to distinguish reality in a society saturated with information. The film highlights the mechanisms by which a rumour can become accepted as collective truth and shows how the media, social media and preconceptions can fabricate a narrative completely divorced from reality.

To convey this reflection, the students have chosen the genre of satire. The tone oscillates between realism and absurdity, with a gradual escalation towards increasingly extravagant situations. The supporting characters embody easily identifiable archetypes: TV commentators, influencers, customers in a bar-tobacconist’s, and media personalities. Behind the humour, the film also tackles the issue of everyday racism, presented as one of the driving forces behind the collective frenzy that engulfs the main character.

A comedy driven by the acting and the situations

This desire to blend humour and thoughtfulness is reflected in the direction of the actors. The team has opted for a style of humour that relies more on situations, glances and reactions than on dialogue. Movement, silences and body language thus become essential tools for creating comic contrast.

The directors also cite influences such as *Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire* and *Adieu les cons*, two films that use the absurd to tackle serious subjects through characters who are overwhelmed by events. The aim is to portray Youssef as an ordinary character caught up in a set of circumstances that are completely beyond his control, whilst retaining a sense of humanity and credibility.

A narrative that shifts from reality to the absurd

Visually, *Le Feu aux poudres* is built on a powerful concept: allowing the imagery to evolve in tandem with the media frenzy. The film opens in a style reminiscent of a documentary, with understated, realistic shots. Then, as the rumour swells, the imagery transforms.

The framing becomes more jittery, the focal lengths shorter and the faces more distorted, as if the camera itself were infected by the collective hysteria. In the sequences focusing on social media and the news, the screen gradually fills with contradictory information and viral content until it creates a veritable visual overload. This stylistic choice mirrors the main character’s loss of bearings whilst reinforcing the critique of the media spectacle.

A sound piece in the service of satire

Sound also plays a central role in the project. Initially rooted in Youssef’s everyday life, it gradually becomes all-encompassing. Voices overlap, notifications pile up and media commentary blends together to form a cacophony symbolising disinformation.

Conversely, certain scenes play on silence and unease, particularly when Youssef finds himself confronted by the stares of others. This contrast between media clamour and the character’s isolation reinforces the film’s critical dimension and illustrates how media noise ultimately takes precedence over the facts.

Artistic direction thought through down to the smallest detail

The various artistic departments worked along the same lines. The sets contrast cold, standardised public spaces with the warmth of Youssef’s family home, the only place where he can be himself, far from judgement and prejudice. The costumes emphasise the stereotypes of the various social groups depicted in the film, whilst the visual effects help to recreate the initial fire as well as the avalanche of digital interfaces that gradually take over the narrative.

An ambitious and socially conscious student film

With *Le Feu aux poudres*, the students have created an ambitious work that uses the conventions of comedy to question our relationship with information, the media and the truth. Behind the laughter and the absurdity lies a reflection on a society where social media amplifies rumours, where prejudice fuels hasty judgements and where a simple news item can become a national spectacle.

A short film that aims to make you smile as much as it invites you to reflect, reminding us that today, a mere cigarette butt can sometimes be enough to set the powder keg alight.

Currently in post-production, the film will be screened at the Cinécréatis Grand Jury event at the UGC Ciné Atlantis in Nantes in early July. The students and their families will have the opportunity to see the film on the big screen.
