Student profile : Klara Johansson

Klara Johansson is a 3rd year film and audiovisual student in Nantes: portrait of the director of the documentary “Un brin d’existence”.

Hi Klara: can you introduce yourself?

My name is Klara Johansson, and I was born in Brussels to a Swedish father and a French mother.

I grew up with my little brother in Bamako, Mali, and that’s where my earliest values and memories come from.

When I returned to Belgium, I studied at the European School in Brussels IV to obtain the European Baccalaureate, and then I moved to France for the first time in my life to study film.

Today I live in Nantes where I’m in my 3rd year of training at CinéCréatis Nantes. I had the opportunity to make a documentary called “Un brin d’existence” about the charity Un Brin de Causette, which offre free breakfasts for people in need.

When this project came to an end, I wanted to continue my social commitment to thengo ONE, of which I am a young ambassador.

I didn’t really know what I wanted to specialise in when I came to school, so CinéCréatis gave me the chance to try out lots of things: I was a cameraman, editor and director on various projects (including Un brin d’existence and Pas à pas).

What advice would you give to new students?

If I have one piece of advice to give to new students, it’s to come with an open mind to all the dominant themes, even if they’re convinced they know what they want to do, because it’s important to understand the work of others and that’s always useful.

What project are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently doing a post-production internship on the programme Objectif Top-chef, where I’m learning to work on Avid Media Composer editing software as part of a workflow that’s a lot bigger than the ones I learnt at school.

It’s very rewarding, and I’d love to go on to work as an assistant editor on a feature film or documentary.

I’m also planning to make my graduation film, Alizée, which was cancelled because of covid, in the coming year. To be continued…
